Rios and Alvarado give us one for the ages!
Last Saturday it was all about proving to the world that they belong in the ring with the best. Be it Nonito Donaire trying to make a good case for him that he is the best fighter in the world as Brandon Rios telling everybody that his recent setbacks don’t mean he is a bad fighter. Well, after what we witnessed we can honestly say that Brandon Rios is way better than we expected and would probably give hell to any fighter around his weight class. Nonito on the other hand bored us once again with his approach. I don’t buy the whole nonsense that “you need a dance partner” in order for a great fight. You know what? A fighter like Nonito should blow fighters like this away. He’s had two opportunities and has failed to impress. Now, what he did to Fernando Montiel and Vic Darchinian was stuff of legends and maybe we elevated him to a level he really isn’t in. Yet. Fighting like this reminds me of Roy Jones, ultra talented yet not able to impress consistently.
Now with the fight that really matters. Brandon Bam Bam Rios and Mike Alvarado were expected to give us a fight of the year candidate, not a fight of the decade. The term rock em sock em robots applies here as they didn’t stop hitting each other throughout the course of the seven rounds they gave us. Both combatants gave their hearts out in this fight and totally exceeded the expectations. That is a rarity these days as most events fail to live up to them. Rios bit hard and survived some hard shots by Alvarado only to wear him down and knock him out convincingly in the seventh. The second and sixth round were round of the year candidates and the fight will surely contend as the best of the year. I will say it again, these kind of fighters should earn a place in the hall of fame even if they don’t have the accolades of others. Getting in these kind of fights surviving them and coming back should be an attribute that not everybody can achieve, it should be respected.
What these two men accomplished in the ring last Saturday night is something that I don’t know if Broner, Mayweather, Ward and those so called “skilled” fighters would be able to whit stand. A guy like Gatti should be in the Hall of Fame because he did things none of these fighters ever did, something inhumanly like. They fought Fights of the Year, fights that will be remembered more than the way one of these p4p fighters skillfully dismantled a warrior. Come on! Give me a fighter like Brandon Rios over a Nonito any day of the week, i’ll pay for a fight featuring Alvarado and Rios first than going in to a borefest of pound 4 pounders.
