NFL Sunday: Random Thoughts

After my last place in my NFL pool this week I can finally sit down and talk about some of the things that just happened around the league. Even though many are talking about Peyton Manning’s debut with the Denver Broncos, I must say that the real highlight of the weekend was without a doubt the total clinic given to the Packers by the 49ers. This team is now a force and probably the one to beat if you want to get to the Super Bowl. The way they manhandled the line of scrimmage of the Packers was scary given the quality of opposition. They looked pretty much unbeatable yesterday.

A lot of surprises around the league starting off with the first game where Dallas overpowered the Giants. A lot of parlays were broken with the dominance by the Washington Redskins over the New Orleans Saints. How the mighty have fallen. Drew Brees didn’t play particulary well and even though they were trying to comeback in the end in typical Brees fashion the fact that the rest of the game was so one sided says more about the current situation of the Saints than anything else that happened.

Houston looked like the frontrunner it is. Many have predicted that the Texans will be battling for the top spot in the AFC with their talented core, and they looked every bit like it yesterday with their dominating performance. The Jets and their new Tebow/Sanchez combo seems to be working marvels these days as they took their new formula and aplied it in their destruction of division rival Buffalo Bills.

Patriots are still the Patriots, when you have the coach-qb this team has you will always be in the run for a title. Tonight we have two games that might turn out to be pretty interesting. Baltimore looks to win at home vs the Cincinnati Bengals and te Raiders look to beat the Chargers for the third consecutive time, which some two years ago seemed unlikely. Look for both games to be close grinding affairs that will come down to the battles at the line of scrimmage.
