Boxing Nation: Top Rank vs Golden Boy
We finally got the match we wanted. Top Rank announced that Sergio Martinez will defend his linear Middleweight Championship vs the son of the legend Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. next September 15 at the Thomas and Mack Center in Las Vegas Nevada. This fight is coming off after Chavez destroyed contender Andy Lee a couple of weeks ago putting himself in a very good position to upset the older argentinian champion this mexican independence day. As many of you know, the real grudge fight has been going on outside the ring between promoters Top Rank and Golden Boy Promotions as both had secured this date in order to put their main dogs, Canelo Alvarez for GBP and Chavez Jr. for Top Rank against quality opposition. Canelo’s rivals have been falling to accidents, injuries and loses and he is yet to have a real opponent. For now he is facing the dreaded TBA (to be announced), a potential failure come fight night money wise.
We as fans shouldn’t be put in this situation by the promotional companies, we are a small group that can only afford a Pay Per View at a time and putting the most popular fighters fight the same day isn’t good business for nobody. Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fight is more intriguing than any fight Canelo can have right now except maybe if he would face Mayweather, which won’t happen. A Chavez Jr vs Martinez fight is a genuine super fight this days, and nothing that Golden Boy gives us with Canelo can top this, at least the current available challengers. A fight vs Miguel Cotto would be very interesting but still is a not as important as the Middleweight championship.
Golden Boy Promotions is making a fool out of themselves with their claims that they’re cleaning out the sport with this kind of actions. To me, its the same thing that used to happen between Don King Productions/King Vision and Top Rank in the early 90′s. Nothing that Golden Boy has done has made them look anywhere near alike Mother Teresa. They seem as greedy and corrupt as any promoter that has been related to the sport. So I urge you Oscar and crowd, stop claiming to be the fixer of the sport and start doing things that favor the fans like letting the sport move on with great fights without tarnishing it with this kind of B.S. The battle between Top Rank and Golden Boy is one of the worst we’ve ever seen in the sport. They have rid us of the biggest fight the game can offer us these days a fight between Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. There are also other potential matchups that can’t be made because these greedy people want everything for themselves. What they don’t know is that with this kind of acts they are actually making the cake smaller as many of the fans are being alienated to other sports like the UFC, which is very well organized.
With this feud going on the sports best possible fights will never be made. Canelo vs Chavez Jr will only be a dream, let alone Manny vs Floyd. Other fighters like Yuriorkis Gamboa and Nonito Donaire will suffer because of this. I really hope that Golden Boy Promotion, who claim to be fixing the sport ever since they came by, learn from the mistakes they continue to make, and actually do something about making the fights. Boxing as a whole has been suffering ever since they came along and we need that to stop.
